Changing and Learning

"It's what you learn after you know it all that counts." ~ Harry Truman

Changing and learning is a sense of oneself as someone who learns and changes over time; the opposite is being "stuck and static".

Critical Curiosity

"Just when you think you know all you need to know, you ask another question and discover how much more you need to know." ~ A Sixth Grader

Critical curiosity is the want to "get beneath the surface"; the opposite is being "passive".

Meaning Making

"Learning is a change in the meaning of experience." ~ Bob Gowin

Meaning making is making connections and seeing that learning "matters to me"; the opposite is simply "accumulating information".

Creativity

"Imagination is more important than knowledge." ~ Albert Einstein

Creativity is risk-taking, playfulness, imagination, and intuition; the opposite is being "rule-bound" or "rigid".

Learning Relationships or Interdependence

"What [individuals] can do together today, they can also do alone tomorrow." ~ L. Vygotsky

Learning relationships is being able to learn from others; the opposite is being "isolated". Interdependence is being able to learn alone; the opposite is being "over-dependent".

Strategic Awareness

"I can hardly think of anything more worth learning than learning to learn." ~ David Perkins

Strategic awareness is being aware of one's thoughts, feelings, and actions as a learner and using that awareness to plan and manage learning processes; the opposite is being "robotic".

Resilience

"Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm." ~ Winston Churchill

Resilience is the orientation to perservere in the development of one's own learning and to relish challenge; the opposite is being "fragile" and "dependent"
